ALBANY HOUSING AUTHORITY – RESIDENT COMMISSIONER – JOB DESCRIPTION

ALBANY HOUSING AUTHORITY  •  RESIDENT COMMISSIONER  •  JOB DESCRIPTION

The position of Resident Commissioner is an opportunity for a qualified person living in housing that is owned or under the control of the Albany Housing Authority (AHA) to have a voice on the Board that establishes the policies, programs, and direction for Public Housing and Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher units in the City of Albany.  The Albany Housing Authority Board is composed of seven (7) Commissioners: five (5) are appointed by the Mayor of the City of Albany and two (2) are elected by the residents of housing under the jurisdiction of the AHA.  Resident Commissioners serve two year terms.

The Election for the Resident Commissioner positions will be October 13, 2015.  To qualify for the position of Resident Commissioner, the candidate must meet the following conditions:

  • Reside in housing owned or controlled by the Albany Housing Authority

(Includes both public housing residents and Section 8 recipients) at least 30 days prior to the election;

  • Be at least 18 year of age or older;
  • Be a tenant in good standing and not be in violation or default of lease obligations;
  • Get at least 50 signatures from residents of the AHA or Section 8 to secure a nomination;
  • Participate in the Candidates Forums prior to the Election; and
  • Be willing and able to fulfill the obligations required of a Commissioner, including attending the monthly meetings of the AHA Board, becoming familiar with the issues on the agenda, and actively participating in the discussions and decision-making process.

Because the Resident Commissioners reside in housing that is under the authority of the AHA, they are in a unique position to bring relevant tenant issues and concerns before the Board. To represent residents of the AHA effectively, the Resident Commissioners should maintain contact or reach out to the Tenant Associations, Tenant Patrols, and other Community Associations that fall within the jurisdiction of the Albany Housing Authority. The Resident Commissioners should, when possible, attend the meetings of these organizations.
