The Albany Housing Authority has been steadily and aggressively working in partnership with the City of Albany, Cornell Cooperative Extension and Waste Management Inc. to dramatically enhance the effectiveness of its recycling program. It is increasingly obvious that “Going Green” has to be more than just a slogan; it has to be a part of the Authority’s daily operational routine. Solid waste is a problem that must be effectively managed if we are to pass on a healthy planet to our children. The Albany Housing Authority and its partners are committed to this goal and believe that it can be reached through effectively managing the recycling program throughout each and every Authority owned property.

Waste Management Inc. has improved their recycling technology to the point that all recyclables may go in the same “recycling” collection container. With this type of streamlined recycling collection program there is no requirement to separate or sort recyclable products, thus simplifying the process considerably. The Authority requires that all of its residents recycle and has provided the appropriate recycling containers to each and every household. Along with recycling containers every resident has received individual recycling instructions that are specific to that resident’s property. Additionally, the Authority has mailed out recycling brochures to each tenant that clearly indicates what is and is not recyclable, how the recycling program works and also informational phone numbers in which the tenant can call should they have any questions or concerns with regard to recycling at their site.
