Housing Authorities Plan Father’s Day Activities
On the Saturday of Fathers’ Day Weekend, June 18, PHAs nationwide will host special events for fathers and their children, in collaboration with local partners. This Fathers’ Day 2011 initiative was inspired by a program that the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) launched last summer and has continued monthly. According to HUD, the events have two purposes: to strengthen the bonds between fathers and their children, and to make education, health care, and employment resources available to the fathers that may lead to economic self-sufficiency.
Once again, this year, the Albany Housing Authority has provided housing for students from the Xavier University of Cincinnati, Ohio’s Alternative Breaks program. The students were in Albany from March 5th to March 11th and were engaged in a number of projects throughout the week. One of these projects was the NY Gang Prevention Program. This one week collaboration between the students and the city of Albany offers these students the chance to volunteer and assist a program of their choice, while gaining valuable life experience and providing community service.
