Going Green

Albany Recycles Logo (2)The Albany Housing Authority has been steadily and aggressively working in partnership with the City of Albany, Cornell Cooperative Extension and County Waste to dramatically enhance the effectiveness of its recycling program. It is increasingly obvious that “Going Green” has to be more than just a slogan; it has to be a part of the Authority’s daily operational routine. Solid waste is a problem that must be effectively managed if we are to pass on a healthy planet to our children. The Albany Housing Authority and its partners are committed to this goal and believe that it can be reached through effectively managing the recycling program throughout each and every Authority owned property.

County Waste has improved their recycling technology to the point that all recyclables may go in the same “recycling” collection container. With this type of streamlined recycling collection program there is no requirement to separate or sort recyclable products, thus simplifying the process considerably. The Authority requires that all of its residents recycle and has provided the appropriate recycling containers to each and every household. Along with recycling containers every resident has received individual recycling instructions that are specific to that resident’s property. Additionally, the Authority has mailed out recycling brochures to each tenant that clearly indicates what is and is not recyclable, how the recycling program works and also informational phone numbers in which the tenant can call should they have any questions or concerns with regard to recycling at their site.

AHA Receives 2009 Preservation Merit Awards

ALBANY, NY – Historic Albany Foundation held its Annual Meeting and 2009 Preservation Merit Awards at the James T. Foley Courthouse, 445 Broadway on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at 5:30pm.

Each year during National Historic Preservation Month, Historic Albany Foundation celebrates excellence in preservation throughout the City of Albany by presenting exemplary preservation projects with Preservation Merit Awards. Deborah VanAmerongen, Commissioner of the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal (DHCR) joined them to present Albany Housing Authority with the 2nd Elizabeth P. Griffin Award for Preservation Leadership for their many contributions to Albany’s historic districts for both stellar rehabilitation projects and for their sensitive infill housing. “It was a pleasure to present the Elizabeth Griffin Award for Preservation Leadership to Albany Housing Authority and to acknowledge just how responsive and effective the agency has been in addressing the needs of the city. In recent years, DHCR has partnered with the Albany Housing Authority on a number of significant projects, including the revitalization and redevelopment of the South End and Arbor Hill. They have been excellent partners and we look forward to working with them in the future,” said Commissioner VanAmerongen.

The seven awardees were being honored for beautifully restored homes, a successfully rehabilitated public space, four redeveloped and revitalized historic districts, a converted commercial to residential building and a very special project called the “Ronald McDonald House.” Historic Albany Foundation’s Executive Director, Susan Holland states, “Our award winners during Historic Albany’s 35th anniversary year, represent different organizations, individuals and companies that have been at the restoration game for months and perhaps, years. The projects really highlight what can be done to revitalize the city, even in the current ‘historic’, economic climate.”
