Public Housing

Albany Housing Authority was established by NYS legislation in 1948. The first housing units constructed were Robert M. Whalen Homes located in Arbor Hill. Between 1951 and now, AHA has grown to 17 developments including new construction in North Albany made possible by the HOPE VI program.

AHA continues its growth with its over 1900 units of Housing Choice and Enhanced Voucher programs, tax credit units, affordable housing program home ownership and rental units. Acquisition of additional housing developments is being investigated. An existing development is near the closing stages. Albany Housing Authority is the City of Albany's largest landlord.

The AHA family has grown from a 3 person operation at its beginnings to an average staff of 120 persons in an array of departments.

AHA has made a commitment to its residents over the years to assure quality housing at affordable prices as well as to provide programs and services that will lead to self-sufficiency. Computer classes, GED, youth programs, counseling and referral services, job skill development, resume writing , job search and placement programs are available.

Albany Housing Authority is proud to be a part of the community of Albany.
