The mission of the Albany Housing
Authority is to lead the community with professionalism,
integrity and spirit in providing quality housing of choice
for a diverse population and to partner with the community
to maximize social and economic opportunity.
Albany Housing Authority was established
by NYS legislation in 1948. The first housing units constructed
were Robert M. Whalen Homes located in Arbor Hill.
Between 1951 and now, AHA has grown to
17 developments including new construction in North Albany
made possible by the HOPE VI program.
Housing Occupancy
Albany Housing Authority has variety of
housing available including traditional public housing,
NYS assisted public housing, Project based Vouchers (used
in NYS assisted developments at Creighton Storey Homes
and Townsend Park Apartments, Low Income Housing Tax Credit
apartments (LIHTC) and LIHTC units that are public housing
units. AHA also has market rate units at its Nutgrove Apartments.
Homeownership is a continually growing program offered

Residents and voucher program participants
are encouraged to utilize the many self-sufficiency programs
offered at the Community Classroom and at the Techology,
Help, & Education
(T.H.E.) Center. Both are located in Steamboat Square and
offer a variety of topics including GED, basic computer & word
processing, employment assistance, referrals, case management,
etc.
